Was GOP overly confident going into the primaries?

The GOP’s confidence going into yesterday’s primaries may have been based on the hype of winning the gubernatorial races in New Jersey and Virginia. Governors don’t vote in Washington and those elections may have been more a referendum on local economic and political matters as opposed to where the country is going.

If that is indeed the case, the Republicans failed to take away from New Jersey and Virginia an important lesson: all politics is local.
