Not naming Mrs. Pelosi as House minority leader would send at least a symbolic signal that Democrats are ready to continue the conciliatory tone already being set by President Obama. Pelosi is a symbol of poor legislative judgment, having led the Democrats to draft the healthcare and stimulus acts. Mr. Hoyer, having carried at her bidding since January 2007, would not provide the change in vision that the Democrats need.
The only member of the leadership that has expressed the level headedness needed by the Democrats in the upcoming 112th Congress is Mr. Clyburn. Mr. Clyburn has been able to tow the party line without handcuffing himself to Mrs. Pelosi’s tainted legislative and policy vision. For this reason, he should at least remain party whip if not be named minority leader himself.
