Obama opens a Cultural War Issue

Mr. Obama made a personal statement on gay marriage today. I understand his evolution. It took me 16 years and meeting a great professor in law school to change my personal views on same-sex marriage. Politically, however, his statement is a waste of political capital, putting Mr. Obama in that cultural war box, a box he doesn’t need to be in.

One Response to Obama opens a Cultural War Issue

  1. Ken Ciszewski says:

Obama took a big risk. It might have been calculated to see Mitt Romney’s reaction. I saw Romney’s statement on TV. It was at best, muted!!!!! Romney said he believes marriage is between a man and a woman. He said it tepidly, without much fan fare or, in my opinion, much conviction. His reply was pretty flat. It appears it’s not an issue he wants to emphasize in his campaign. Maybe he’s a moderate after all! Or maybe, he concerned a strong response might backfire. There is a lot of sentiment among the younger generation that being gay is OK, that it’s not sinful, that it’s no big deal, and that gay “marriage” is no big deal either. Romney probably doesn’t want to alienate the younger generation, or any number of independents. He’s walking a fine line here.
