One of the downsides of the popular vote is that it’s more like The American Idol than a test of our knowledge about the duties of the American president. I don’t pretend to be a personal fan of Mr. Obama, but I’m a fair person and will call a spade a spade.
When you are the first non-white with a Muslim sounding name running to succeed a Dick Cheney led administration, I’m more than positive that Mr. Obama was scrutinized head to toe by Cheney, the CIA, and the FBI. Most Americans don’t know what the duties of a president are much less can provide any valid critique other than they simply don’t like him. It gets old.
It is rare to get a sound policy argument out of someone who doesn’t like him because, “Obama did not share the black experience.” I’ve heard this a number of times from barnyard dwelling, shuffling 1960s Negroes. They are all over Twitter talking that stuff. No wonder we couldn’t even field Colin Powell for president. These same yahoos wouldn’t have voted him either.
In the end, all the more reason to abolish the popular vote. Let’s face it. The only people qualified to vote for president are recently naturalized U.S. citizens. Why? Because they actually have to take tests about the nation’s history and political system.
We’ve allowed ourselves to be so dumbed down with our reality TV mentalities that we don’t have the energy or insights to probe policy and look at outputs. Look at the president’s duties, then look at the results, the outputs of his policies, and determine whether he passes muster. The inefficiencies we put into the election process by voting someone out of office simply because their wife’s butt is perceived as “too big” (personally, I love Michelle’s butt, literally and figuratively) increases the transactional costs of a presidential succession and transition. But that’s the downside of American democracy.
I haven’t declared who I’ll be voting for this cycle, but if you, as a black critic of the president, think Romney is a better candidate because you think you can relate to his flip-flopping ass on issues or as a white critic of the President, you are voting for Romney because the only thing you have in common with his uber-rich, scared to serve in Vietnam while poor people pulled the burden ass, is that you look like him, then you are just as dim-witted.
It’s time for the American electorate to jack up the intellect and simply man up.
