Wise political counsel from a wise lady

One of my earliest lessons in politics came from Marilyn Stapleton. Ms. Stapleton, who was married to my cousin Frankie Stapleton, aka Frankie Drew, was ahead of her time. In the 1970s, she was head of Eastern Airlines (USVI-Puerto Rico Division); chairman of the USVI Democratic Party, and President of the Nevis Benevolent Society.

This was way back before the phrase “strong, black woman was co-opted by today’s lack of substance wannabees, but I digress.

When I was about fourteen years old and at a party over at her house I asked Ms. Stapleton what was the difference between a Democrat and a Republican. Ms. Stapleton responded, “Junie. A Democrat will stab you in the back, and bleed you out slowly while smiling in your face. A Republican will stab you in the chest while looking you in the eye.”

In the end, if you support either party, I guess it depends on how you want to get cut ….
